Telegram has one built-in control: Show 18+ Content, in Telegram’s Settings › Data and Storage on iPhone. Keep it off, and media Telegram marks as 18+ stays behind a warning, but anyone can tap View Anyway, and it covers only what Telegram marks. The Blocker can’t filter Telegram chats or channels. What you can control is the links you open from Telegram (send them to Safari, or use Pro’s Strong protection for links inside apps) and Telegram itself (Screen Time limits, or Strong protection’s Blocked apps to keep it closed).

Written by the developer of The Blocker. Facts checked 22 October 2026 against Telegram’s own pages, the text in Telegram’s published iPhone source code and Apple’s Screen Time guides. The Blocker is not affiliated with Telegram, and Telegram’s menus change often.

Telegram’s own setting: Show 18+ Content

Telegram’s iPhone app tells you where it is: “You can update the visibility of sensitive media in Data and Storage > Show 18+ Content.” The setting’s note reads: “Do not hide media that contain content suitable only for adults.” So, to keep that media hidden, leave it off: Telegram › Settings › Data and Storage › Show 18+ Content (Telegram’s app text).

What it does, and what it doesn’t:

  • It’s a curtain, not a lock. Media Telegram has marked as 18+ shows a warning, “This media may contain sensitive content suitable only for adults. Do you still want to view it?”, with View Anyway and Always show 18+ media buttons.
  • Turning it on takes one confirmation. The app asks you to “Confirm that you are over 18 years old”. There is no passcode for this setting.
  • It belongs to the account, not the phone. Telegram’s developer documentation describes an account setting for “viewing of sensitive (NSFW) content” and says a given app may or may not be allowed to change it (Telegram). Telegram runs on many devices at once, including Telegram Web in a browser (Telegram FAQ), so check it after signing in anywhere new.
  • It covers only what is marked. Telegram’s documentation says content marked sensitive “may be accessed, provided it’s hidden behind a 18+ spoiler”, and that some countries require an age check first (Telegram). It doesn’t describe a filter that checks everything people send you.

Channels Telegram blocks on iPhone

Some channels show this on iPhone: “You can’t access this channel because it violates App Store rules.” Telegram decides which ones; its documentation says access can be restricted “for a variety of platforms and reasons” (Telegram). Telegram’s terms ban “illegal pornographic content on publicly viewable Telegram channels, bots, etc.” (Terms). Neither gives you a filter for what friends or groups send you.

Telegram says links to other sites “can be opened right in the Telegram Browser or in your preferred app”, and that on iPhone the choice is in Telegram › Settings › Privacy and Security › Open Links in. It adds that its browser “does not store browsing history” (Telegram, June 2026). The browser has its own tabs that you can collapse and reopen (Telegram, 2024). For blocking, this matters:

  • The Blocker (free) works in Safari and in Safari views, the ready-made Safari window some apps use, which keeps Safari’s “content blocking” (Apple). Telegram doesn’t say its browser is a Safari view, so don’t count on the free version inside it. Set Open Links in to Safari and links from Telegram open where The Blocker works. Anyone with the phone can switch it back.
  • Strong protection (Pro) uses a Screen Time web filter that iOS applies. The app says adult sites stay blocked “in links you open inside apps like Instagram or X”. It blocks Apple’s adult filter plus up to 50 of your own sites. iOS decides which in-app browsers follow it, so test it in Telegram.

A safe test: add a harmless site you never use to The Blocker’s block list, send its address to yourself in Telegram’s Saved Messages, and tap it. If the page loads inside Telegram, that path isn’t covered on your phone. More on in-app browsers: Instagram and TikTok’s browsers.

Keep Telegram closed

If Telegram itself is the problem, the controls that work sit in iOS, not in Telegram:

  • Blocked apps (Pro). In Strong protection, pick Telegram in Apple’s app picker and it stays closed while Strong protection is on. A Hard moment blocks every website and your blocked apps for one hour, and it can’t be ended early.
  • App Limits (free). On iOS 26: Settings › Screen Time › App Limits › Add Limit, then open a category to pick Telegram and set a time. Apple notes: “By default, Screen Time limits can be ignored once reached” (Apple). On iOS 27, use Settings › Screen Time › Time Allowances, which sets daily time per category (Apple). Either way, set a Screen Time passcode held by someone you trust: Apple says you need it “to change the settings, limits, or restrictions” (Apple).
  • Delete Telegram, then restrict installing apps in Settings › Screen Time › Content & Privacy Restrictions › iTunes & App Store Purchases (Apple).
  • Telegram Web. Telegram also runs in a browser at web.telegram.org. To close that door too, add web.telegram.org to The Blocker’s block list: blocked in Safari for free, and in every browser with Strong protection.

What The Blocker can’t do on Telegram

The Blocker doesn’t read or filter Telegram chats, channels, groups, photos, videos or bots, and neither does Screen Time’s web filter: that content arrives inside the app, not as a web page you open. Strong protection filters web pages and keeps the apps you choose closed. Anyone with your Screen Time passcode can undo it, and The Blocker sends no reports to anyone. Pro is $4.99 a month, $29.99 a year or $49.99 once (US prices; the App Store shows your local price).

For parents

Telegram’s terms say users in EU countries, the United Kingdom and Australia “must be at least 18 years old to sign up” (Terms). The US App Store rated Telegram 12+ on 22 October 2026 (App Store). On a child’s iPhone, a Telegram setting that one confirmation can change is weak protection; keeping the app closed, or deleted with installs restricted, is clearer. See blocking porn on a child’s iPhone and my kid is bypassing Screen Time.

Questions people ask

How do I turn off sensitive content on Telegram on iPhone?

Open Telegram › Settings › Data and Storage and make sure Show 18+ Content is off. Media Telegram marks as 18+ then stays behind a warning. Anyone can still tap View Anyway, so it is a curtain, not a lock.

Can The Blocker block porn and adult content on Telegram?

Not inside chats or channels. It can block adult websites you open from Telegram: in Safari for free, and inside Telegram’s own browser with Pro’s Strong protection (test it on your phone). Strong protection’s Blocked apps can also keep Telegram closed.

Why does Telegram say a channel violates App Store rules?

Telegram’s iPhone app shows “You can’t access this channel because it violates App Store rules.” for channels Telegram restricts on iPhone. Telegram makes that decision, not Screen Time and not The Blocker.

Can I lock Telegram’s 18+ setting with a password?

Telegram asks only for a confirmation when it is turned on; there is no separate password for this setting. If you need a lock, put it in Screen Time: an app limit with a passcode someone you trust holds, or Strong protection’s Blocked apps.
