Plan for the night during the day. Nights can be harder because you are tired, often alone, and the phone is in bed with you. Charge the phone outside the bedroom, set Apple’s Downtime (iOS 26) or Screen Time Schedule (iOS 27), and keep a blocker on all day. When an urge comes, remember it is a wave: breathe, stand up and change rooms. If you slip, go to sleep and start again tomorrow, without shame.

Written by the developer of The Blocker. This is practical advice, not medical advice. Settings names can differ with your iOS version and language.

Why nights can feel harder

At night you are tired. You may be alone, the room is quiet, and the phone is within reach. Stress from the day can look for a quick escape. The Blocker’s late-night message says it plainly: “It’s late — tired minds give in.”

None of this makes you a bad person. It means the night needs a plan, made earlier, while you are rested.

Before night: set things up while you are rested

Charge your phone outside the bedroom. Use a simple alarm clock if you need one. A phone in another room is harder to reach on impulse.

Set a nightly schedule in Screen Time. The name and path depend on your iOS version:

  • iOS 26: Downtime. Go to Settings → Screen Time → Downtime, tap Scheduled, choose Every Day or Customize Days, and set the start and end times. Apple says that during downtime, “only calls, messages, and apps you choose to allow are available.” Turn on Block at Downtime if you want restricted apps to stay closed. With it off, you only see a reminder and can keep going (Apple).
  • iOS 27: Screen Time Schedule. Apple replaced Downtime with Screen Time Schedule and Time Allowances. Go to Settings → Screen Time → Screen Time Schedule, turn on Schedule, then tap Add Schedule. Time Allowances set how long you use apps each day. This needs version 27 or later on all your Apple devices (Apple).

Keep a blocker on all day, not only at night. The setup we recommend is Apple’s Limit Adult Websites, The Blocker in Safari, no other browsers, and a Screen Time passcode held by someone you trust. The setup guide walks you through it. To make it hard to switch off late at night, read how to make a porn blocker hard to turn off. For no-cost options, see free ways to block porn on iPhone.

Make an if-then plan

When you are tired, deciding is hard. So decide now. Write one or two short plans in the form “If this happens, then I do that”:

  • “If I’m in bed with my phone after midnight, then I put it outside the room.”
  • “If I catch myself scrolling with no goal, then I stand up and turn on the light.”
  • “If I see a blocked page, then I close the tab and put the phone face down across the room.”

Keep each plan short enough to remember half asleep.

When an urge comes

This urge is a wave. It will pass. You don’t have to win a fight. You only have to let the wave pass without following it. Try any of these:

  • Breathe slowly. In for 4 seconds, out for 6. Repeat a few times.
  • Stand up. Turn on a light, leave the room, drink a glass of water.
  • Put the phone down and walk away for 10 minutes.
  • Message someone you trust. You don’t have to explain. “Can’t sleep. Talk for a minute?” is enough.
  • Close the tab and follow your if-then plan.

How The Blocker helps at night

If you join the free 30-day challenge and turn on The Blocker Stats in Safari’s extensions (the app shows you how), a blocked site in Safari becomes a calm rescue page. It shows your reason (if you added one), your challenge day, your clean days and, once you have some, how many times you said no this month. A Close this tab button takes you out. The headline and prompt change with the moment:

WhenHeadlineWhat it asks
Most of the time“This urge is a wave. It will pass.”“Breathe with the circle: in for 4 seconds, out for 6.”
Late night, 00:00 to 04:59 on your phone’s clock“It’s late — tired minds give in.”“Sleep now. Tomorrow you will be glad you did.”
3 or more blocked pages within 10 minutes, any hour“The wave is high right now.”“Put the phone down and walk away for 10 minutes.”

If both of the last two apply, the “wave is high” message comes first. The rescue page appears only if you join the challenge and The Blocker Stats is on. Your reason and answers stay on your device. Like the rest of The Blocker, it works in Safari only.

After a slip

Be as kind to yourself as you would be to a friend. One hard night does not erase the days before it.

In The Blocker’s challenge, a slip never resets anything: it marks its day, and the challenge goes on. Your day number keeps moving forward; that one day just isn’t counted as clean. The app puts it this way: “A slip is information, not the end. Keep going.”

When you log a slip, you can answer three optional questions: when, where and how you felt. Skip them if you like. If slips keep happening at the same time or place, change that part of your plan. Move the charger, or start your schedule earlier.

Then go to sleep. Don’t make big promises at 3 a.m. Make one small change tomorrow.

When to get more help

If this is hurting your sleep, your work or studies, or your relationships, or you keep trying to stop and can’t, talk to a doctor or a licensed therapist. Asking for help is a sensible step, not a failure. You can also talk to someone you trust. A blocker is a tool; it doesn’t replace support from people.

Questions people ask

Is it normal to struggle more at night?

Many people find nights harder. You are tired, often alone, and the phone is close. It is not a sign that you are weak. Plan for the night during the day, when you are rested.

What should I do right now?

Put the phone down, stand up and leave the room if you can. Breathe slowly: in for 4 seconds, out for 6, a few times. Drink some water. This urge is a wave. It will pass. Then charge the phone outside the bedroom.

Does the app know it’s night?

Only from your phone’s clock. If you joined the 30-day challenge and turned on The Blocker Stats, the rescue page shows its late-night message from 00:00 to 04:59 local time. If you hit 3 or more blocked pages within 10 minutes, it shows “The wave is high right now.” instead.

I slipped. Now what?

Be kind to yourself and go to sleep. In the challenge, a slip never resets anything: it marks its day, and the challenge goes on. Tomorrow, change one small thing, like where your phone charges.
